This post took me 12 weeks into my #RoadToSub300 to discover, relearn, and realize. Losing weight is not as simple as most people would think. It’s a constant struggle but can be relatively easy if you are really careful and have presence of mind in the process. I admit that my weight loss is not as quick as before, but I don’t mind it. I’m after the long term effects of this and how much more permanent is it after. Will I hit below 300 by December? I do not know. It’s all on God and how my body reacts so continue to pray for me.

Disclaimer: What I will be discussing is not the by all and end all in weight loss. This is based solely on my experience, what I’ve learned and tried from what my community has taught me, and from what has made sense and have worked for me that’s why I’m sharing this.

In this blog, we will be discussing 4 things in successful weight loss. The operative word here is SUCCESSFUL weight loss and not FAST weight loss. I am aware that a lot of people think they have gotten the weight loss thing down to the T. Probably they do, but not everyone has that gift. I am not one of them. When I joined that reality show in 2011, I never really took to heart what I was doing. I mean, I never really took time to study and understand completely what they were doing to me and simply looked at it as fact. It may be good to some degree but once you go off rail, it may become catastrophic.

So I will discuss the 4 things that need consideration for a successful weight loss. These 4 rely on each other for it to work and be permanent so be sure not to skip each of those. The importance or priority of these 4 solely depends on you. Mine would fall in this order.

By definition, as per Google: A group of people living together in one place, esp. one practicing common ownershipFor me, before venturing into something, unless you are one of those who can successfully do things on their own, the most important thing I make and sustain is the community. I CrossFit, do yoga, run, and do Capoeira, and each of those activities have their own respective community. Why? Imagine yourself doing something that you love and talk about it to your friends who do not understand what the heck you are talking about. They might misunderstand the struggle that you are going through as easy and end up hurting your feelings. The benefits of having a community is priceless. You have a group of individuals who understand you completely. May it be PR-ing on your snatch (CrossFit), pulling and lifting your bow pose (Yoga), doing a 2-on-3-off (running), or hitting that ponteira (Capoeria), it is so fulfilling finding that group who knows how you feel and could even give you tips on areas you need help on.

Anything that gets you moving. May it be walking or what have you. If you are trying to lose weight or just maintain what you currently have, exercise plays a vital role in reaching or maintaining that goal. The best way is to start by doing something consistent and sustainable. Start off with 15 minutes a day for 4 times a week. Then after two weeks, increase it to 30 minutes, and so on and so forth. We are SLOWLY building endurance here. My exercise regimen comprises of the following: 3-4 days a week of yoga, 4-5 days a week of CrossFit, running in fun runs once a month, and practicing Capoeria once to twice a week.

Nutrition plays a big role. Not just in weight loss, but in life in general. Whenever someone gets afflicted with something, everyone would always refer to what they ate before. In weight loss, 70% of your success depends solely on what you take in. Before, I would do a “kick ass” diet and lose a significant amount of weight in such a short time because of the amount of food I had to sacrifice and give up but one or two days of giving in, then the weight comes back in and could even bring in a few more (just to be sure). That’s not what I want. I’ve heard of people who did the liquid diet for 2 weeks and have lost so much but the moment it was over and they ate a cup of rice, one serving of healthy veggies, and some protein, they easily lost what they sacrificed for 2 weeks. That’s something that I do not want to have. My eating lifestyle would be 70%-80% of the good stuff and 20%-30% of the “bad” stuff. Doing this, I think, would allow my body to maintain its sanity. You do not completely deprive yourself with it so that it won’t bounce your body back too much. What you are after is a healthy body; not a thin body. You want a healthy body and not a malnourished one. Keep that in mind. Be careful. I’ve been so hard on myself when I would eat the things that my “diet” discourages me from eating but now, I just look at it and tell myself that I am burning it this week anyway. So I’m both happy and healthy.

Now this is something we easily take for granted. Resting is not a bad thing. In weight loss, resting or sleeping is equally as important as getting after it. Your muscles become toned and become more effective while they are resting. So don’t deprive yourself of that good rest’s sleep. You should give yourself between 6-8 hours of sleep per day. Better if you do 8 hours. Because everything happens while you sleep. Try hitting the sack not later than 11:00PM.

So here’s my secret in weight loss. This week should now give me better results having this in mind. I still have 3 whole months to lose 60 -70 pounds. I will try my best to hit it. If not, it’s not the end of the world. Just continue and move forward. God bless!
